Supporting our Gender Expansive Community
Lived Name and Gender Marker Inclusion
Every person has the right to express themselves in a way that is reflective of what they determine to be their truest identity, and be acknowledged and supported as such. Gender, and perceptions of gender, play a major role in most people’s lives, contributing to the socially constructed classification system that creates assumptions about femininity and masculinity. When an individual falls outside of this traditional gender binary, they are often impacted by physical, emotional, and/or mental harm.
To ensure all members of the SDSU community are supported, included, and uplifted, a Tiger Team was created through the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity to increase awareness of gender expansive communities, provide resources for those communities, and improve the campus climate for the 2SLGBTQIA+, queer, and transgender community. The Tiger Team also recognized the importance of lived name recognition for other members of our community, including those who may change their names for other reasons, to include marriage and adoption.
Lived Names and Gender Identity
A lived name is the name an individual chooses to go by, rather than the name they were given at birth. An individual’s lived name serves as a more accurate representation of their identity and is the name a person uses in their daily life, regardless of whether it matches their legal name. An individual’s lived name and pronouns can also be a more reflective representation of an individual's gender identity.
